ABSTRACT

Introduction: Income inequality is often tolerated and justified, but when it brings about disparities in other domains of life (e.g., health or education), it may be seen with different eyes. In this research, we aimed to explore concerns regarding economic inequality in health, education, and income, and its relationship to supporting collective actions to reduce inequality. Method: We used survey data (N = 20,204, 18 countries) from the Latinobarometer 2020. We conducted descriptive analyses, latent class analyses, and analyses of multilevel linear regression to test our hypothesis. Results: We found that people were more concerned about health access and education opportunities than income inequality. We also identified two classes of people: one class concerned about education and health and the other unconcerned about inequality in any domain. In addition, results showed that all concerns and class membership predicted greater support of collective actions to reduce inequality. Conclusions: These preliminary findings suggest that concerns about education and health disparities may serve to increase awareness of overall inequality and mobilise the public.

ABSTRACT

Introduction:The quota law (nº 12.711/2012) was created with the objective of providing opportunities for students from public schools to enter federal universities. Since then, additional measures have been taken to ensure not only the access, but the permanence of these students in universities. Objectives:This study aimed to assess the academic performance of quota students and non-quota students at the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Pará. Methods:Data were collected from students enrolled in the years 2020 and 2021 through an online questionnaire and the academic history of the volunteers was analyzed. Data analysis was performed with Jamovi software version 1.6.23, using the chi-square test, Student's t test for independent samples, and multivariate linear regression analysis. In all analyses, a significance level of 0.05 was adopted. Results:With a response rate of 39.92% (n=200), the results showed a better academic performance for the non-quotastudents with regard to the General PerformanceCoefficient (p=0.001). In addition, quota students face more difficulties when compared to non-quota students (p<0.0001). In the multiple analysis, it was found that the admission modality (quota students or non-quota students), facing difficulties, receiving aid, and activities outside the University explained together almost 10% of the General Performance Coefficient variable (R² = 0.098). Conclusion:The complexity of the comparison suggests the possibility of multiple causes, including the socioeconomic factor and other difficulties experienced. Understanding and acting on these causes is of fundamental importance for the construction of a quality inclusive university (AU).

ABSTRACT

The use of herbal medicine products worldwide and in Uganda is on the rise and there is much-renewed interest in their use because of the belief that they are safe. However, this belief is not backed up by credible scientific research for many products in Uganda. Almost all herbal products produced locally in Uganda have no scientific proof for their claimed safety and efficacy for the treatment of the various conditions they are claimed to treat example; covid-19, HIV, hypertension, erectile dysfunction, and others. There is an urgent need to quickly improve and enforced research on the local products in order to realise the economic benefits which could be lying hidden in them and put a ban on adulterated products from being sold to the public. This review was conducted in order to determine the challenges and opportunities in the Traditional Herbal Medicine sector in Uganda. It was found out that enormous challenges face the Traditional Medicine sector in Uganda including; lack of research on products available for use, claims of one product treating multiple conditions, adulteration of products with established Pharmaceutical drugs and no stringent regulations on registration of products. However, a lot of opportunities were also noted available for exploitation to develop the sector further. Collaboration with local Universities to speed up research using the Reverse Pharmacology approach [1] on the available products, strictly enforcing regulation on product registration and exploiting the reverse Pharmacology approach to study the local products, aggressive and intentional investment in basic research infrastructures and speeding up Clinical Trials on products found to be safe and effective could allow the realisation of the benefits which could be hidden in the local Traditional Medicine products.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: The elderly population are susceptible to malnutrition due to many factors. Hence, timely malnutrition identification through nutrition screening needs to be performed routinely in health clinics. However, the nutrition screening practice in health clinics need to be improvised for malnutrition identification among the elderly population. This study identifies barriers and opportunities for nutrition screening in elderly patients in health clinic settings. Method: A qualitative study was conducted among healthcare staff from urban and rural health clinics in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia. In-depth individual interviews were performed, audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Non-participant observations that act as triangulation were conducted among elderly patients (aged ≥60 years) attending the sampled health clinics. Both data from the interviews and observations were analysed thematically using NVivo software. Results: Twenty healthcare staff participated in the interviews were medical officers (n=6), medical assistants (n=8), staff nurses (n=4), and community nurses (n=2) with a mean age of 33.7±6.3 years. Twenty- one elderly patients were involved in non-participant observations. The four themes that emerged as barriers and opportunities were: time, patient factors, organisation factors and nutrition screening knowledge. Time constituted the main barrier, whilst incorporating a validated nutrition screening tool into current health screening practices was identified as the most practical approach to performing nutrition screening. Staff also highlighted the need for appropriate guidelines for implementing nutrition screening. Conclusion: This study identified appropriate approaches to implementing nutrition screening among elderly patients in health clinics. Developing a comprehensive nutrition screening guideline may facilitate healthcare staff in performing nutrition screening.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: In recent years, the right to quality and inclusive education, especially for people with disabilities, has been ratified and the emphasis has been placed on teaching that involves students in meaningful and high-quality mathematical experiences. However, there is little research on what are the mathematical learning opportunities that are provided to students who have some type of intellectual disability. In this scenario and in order to characterize this type of opportunity offered in special schools, a multiple case study of eight courses in the first basic cycle of different Chilean schools was carried out. For this, data were collected through the registration and analysis of the content of the mathematical tasks in supports such as notebooks, worksheets and evaluations of four students from each of the eight basic education courses that make up this study. The analysis focused on the categorization by content axes, curricular objectives, mathematical skills and cognitive demand involved in the tasks. The results indicate that the mathematical learning opportunities are focused on the development of the first and second basic learning, almost exclusively in the Numbers and operations topics, whose tasks promote the development of medium complexity skills and with a strong procedural nature. It is concluded that students from special schools have few opportunities to access varied mathematical notions and develop complex skills through rich and challenging tasks, thus limiting their participation and personal development.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Given the importance of inclusive educational debates beyond the target audience of special education, this article aims to analyze the indicators of discussion of inclusive educational proposals in the perspective of the democratization of school opportunities for students with special educational needs, unattached to deficienciesMETHODS: Based on a "state of the art" methodology, thirty-three articles were found, of which only nine focus on the relation of inclusive education to the perspective of democratization of school opportunities. Based on thematic and interpretative analyzes, it was possible to structure four discussion indicators: political and legislative linkages and propositions; new paradigms and new educational conceptions with a focus on professional performance; lack of training and teacher training for inclusive education; failure and school dropoutRESULTS: The analysis of the defined indicators show that the Enactment of public policies specifically aimed at the target audience of Special Education, greatly favored progress towards guaranteeing access for students with disabilities in regular education. On the other hand, it deprived the debate of initial and continuing training policies regarding the democratic postulates of opportunities for students with special educational needs, not linked to deficiencies, in the different school contexts, in addition to the differentiations or specificitiesCONCLUSION: An important parameter for monitoring the progress of inclusive propositions aligned with the understanding assumed in this study, which includes the democratization of the conditions of permanence in the school to all students, is the approximation of the political, social and pedagogical debates defended by the different documents and promulgations related to the school reality, from relational formats, which aim at the constitution of educational and school actions that promote development to the students

ABSTRACT

While civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) plays prominent roles to improve public sector management, i.e., the economic, social and political issues of a population, its adoption has not been yet without challenges and is still in its infant stage in most developing countries, including Ethiopia. This study reviews various literatures and studies made by different researchers and institutions related to the status, challenges and opportunities of CRVS in Ethiopia. Even though, CRVS has got a national recognition before hundred years in the country, the directives and rules are not issued for implementation. According to the findings,Ethiopia is among the countries that have not yet installed CRVS systems in both national and regional levels successfully. It is challenged by infrastructure, capacity building and lack of awareness among the population on the benefits of the system. The status of civil registration and vital statistics is in the lowestrank in Ethiopia. Recently, the aid agencies and the government has been giving special attention to scale up its performance in different parts of the country

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Introduction: After the implementation of remote teaching for the academic activities of the Medicine course at UNICAMP, due to the COVID Pandemic, a new strategy was required to identify the needs of students to allow them to keep up with the course in this new pedagogical modality. Objective: To demonstrate the strategies developed and solutions found to allow for equal access to remote education in the medical course at FCM-UNICAMP. Method: We present data from our institutional report based on questionnaires completed by medical students regarding the difficulties related to access to emergency remote education and the actions taken to solve the main difficulties encountered. Results: We identified that the initial years of the course had the highest proportion of students with difficulties, although all students reported some difficulty. The main problems identified were unstable internet and/or only access via mobile networks, and the most significant difficulty was in accessing the synchronous activities. Most students reported attending classes via computer and notebooks, but this device was often shared with other family members, most notably during the pandemic. Thirty-one students reported difficulties that prevented them from following the course adequately due to lack of devices or internet access. One solution was computers and cell phone chips and tablets being loaned out to students. Teachers were instructed to adapt the pedagogical tools used. Conclusion: Ensuring equal access is essential to support studies to continue following the transition from face-to-face classes to emergency remote study. Listening to students about the difficulties concerning remote teaching is an essential tool for the success of this pedagogical strategy. Guidance of the teaching staff in relation to the difficulties encountered by students was important for the adequacy of remote teaching. These actions helped students in the change of teaching imposed by social distancing.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate early childhood development (ECD) and its determinants in 12 to 59 months old children residents of communities <100 000 inhabitants. Materials and methods: The Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición of communities <100 000 inhabitants (Ensanut 100k) evaluated language level, access to ECD care services and standardized indicators of the eight quality of the development environment. We report indicator prevalence and standardized language scores according to variables of interest. Results: 20.7% of children attended eight well-child care visits within the first year of life, 13.0% received an ECD assessment, 75.0% receive support for learning, 23.4% have books and 57.7% experiment violent discipline. Improved language levels are associate with socioeconomic capacities, maternal education, preschool attendance, support for learning and household books. Children exposed to more protective factors present a language level 1.5 standard deviations higher than their peers exposed to more risk factors. Conclusion: There is a need to increase the coverage of ECD care services and to improve early development opportunities within households.

ABSTRACT

In Argentina, mortality from childhood cancer is higher than in more developed countries, with late diagnosis being one of the possible causes. Our objective was to determine the frequency of barriers to diagnosis faced by families assisted by a Non-Governmental Organization, and some associated demographic, institutional and medical factors. A retrospective observational and quantitative analysis of the diagnosis pathway of children with cancer assisted by the N.D. Flexer Foundation, Argentina, between 1/1/2011 and 12/31/2015 was carried out. The primary outcome was the presence of barriers to diagnosis. It was considered that there was a barrier when there were consultations without diagnostic suspicion, family delay, institutional delay, self-derivation and/ or more than 30 days between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis. The frequency of barriers within each category was contrasted by the χ2 test. A multivariate logistic regression was used to examine its association with relevant variables. Among the 1818 families included, 63.5% faced delays/ barriers to diagnosis. Negative modulators were diagnosis at age younger than 1-year, renal tumor and first attention at a public hospital of the City of Buenos Aires or a provincial capital hospital (all p < 0.0001). Positive modulators were the diagnosis of bone tumor (p = 0.009) and first attention at a primary healthcare center (p< 0.0001) or private doctor's office (p= 0.001). The main non-biological factor associated with the possibility of facing barriers to diagnosis was the type of first contact-health institution.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Less attention is given to cancer treatment and control in Ethiopia. METHODS: To investigate the challenges and opportunities facing cancer treatment services in Ethiopia. A purposive sampling technique was applied to recruit the study subjects from Black Lion Specialized Hospital Oncology Department. A semi-structured interview guide was used to investigate challenges and opportunities in oncology service in Ethiopia. Data was transcribed and coded by two independent coders and analyzed thematically in reference to the objectives. RESULTS: Fifteen professionals from four different disciplines were interviewed on opportunities and challenges facing cancer treatment in Ethiopia. Out of these respondents 3 were senior clinical oncologists while 4 individuals were senior oncology residents. The rest were 2 medical Physicists, 2 radiotherapy technologists and 4 oncology nurses. Majority (80%) of the respondents were males. We demonstrate that the challenges of cancer treatment service in Ethiopia emanate from the patients themselves, the administrating body, the professionals, and the technology limitations. In general, the result of this study was grouped under the following five themes: Customer-related challenges, provider-related challenges, facility-related challenges, technology-related challenges and the opportunities. CONCLUSIONS: Several assignments are waiting for the policy makers, the professionals, the communities and other concerned bodies to combat the alarmingly growing burden of cancer in Ethiopia. Escalating the awareness of the general population about cancer, expanding well-developed diagnostic and treatment centers, and producing well-trained competent oncology professionals are the forefront challenges in combating cancer in Ethiopia.

ABSTRACT

With the approaches of artificial intelligence and big data, the development of cancer genomics and updating of imaging technology, gastric cancer surgery is facing great challenges and opportunities. The main focus is on laparoscopic surgery technology, enhanced recovery after surgery, multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment, and precision medicine. Considering the common de-mand for reduced complication rate among doctors and patients, laparoscopic surgery has become widely popular owing to its advan-tages of small incision and rapid recovery. Furthermore, the development of artificial intelligence and big data has raised a new chal-lenge in routine diagnosis and treatment. As a result, we encourage multicenter cooperation, and data standardization and sharing. At present, completion of the transition from empirical medicine to evidence-based medicine and promotion of the individualization and standardization of gastric cancer treatment are needed.
